Presented here is an original Union army muster-out roll / pay roll document for Company E, 5th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry dated just after the Civil War. This early regiment saw extensive hard service during the war with engagements at Winchester, VA in March 1862 and included hard fighting in Virginia at Hudson’s Corner, Cedar Mountain, Chantilly, Falling Waters, Chancellorsville, and at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. The 5th regiment later transferred to the fighting in Georgia and North Carolina where it was involved in fifteen additional battle engagements.

This military muster-out roll is in good plus condition for its age and chronicles the status of the company’s 194 members for July 1865. Roster listing includes the names of those soldiers from the regiment who were discharged, died, and those who deserted. Muster roll, which measures 35½” long x 30½” high, exhibits extensive pre-printed data at the upper heading on both sides with columns and rows for data which the company commander, Captain Albert L. Gavitt, or his adjutant, filled in by hand in black ink. Entire document is bright and clean with very light foxing and minor edge fraying. This original paper record has one 1” diameter light stain on backside at the lower left corner. Roll as been folded four times and exhibits various small perforations at the fold joints but the paper is strong and easily readable.

A great, original paper artifact with a full muster-out roll report on members of Company E, 5th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.
