Small envelope addressed to a lady care of the Flat River Post Office in Orange County, North Carolina. The envelope is postmarked “HILLSBORO, N.C. DEC. 22, 1861.” The return address on the left edge is “R. F. WEBB, MAJ. 6 INF. N.C. S. TROOPS.” The envelope has light surface dirt and a small repaired tear near the top. There is no letter. Reverse has light collector information in pencil and a torn but complete flap.
Robert F. Webb was commissioned a Captain in Company B, 6th North Carolina Infantry on May 20, 1861. He was promoted to Major on July 11 1861 and to Lieutenant Colonel June 1, 1862 and finally to Colonel on July 3, 1863. He was wounded at Antietam where he was shot in the left arm. In November of 1863 he was captured at Rappahannock Station and confined at Johnson’s Island. He was released upon the close of the war on June 25, 1865.
