This pair of framed passes are for Sergeant Dexter Ladd of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry.

The first pass meas. approx. 4.00 x 3.25 inches. The document is pre-printed and filled out in legible ink. It is a pass to go from the Chesapeake General Hospital near Fort Monroe, Va. to Norfolk. The pass is dated July 4, 1864. There are some minor fold lines along the edges and light surface dirt but otherwise the item is in good condition.

The second pass is dated February 23, 1864. It is also pre-printed and filled out in legible ink. This pass is from the Assistant Quartermaster’s Office, Getty’s Station, Va. United States Military Railroad. The pass allows Sergeant Ladd to go to Portsmouth and return and is good for one trip only. Condition matches the pass described above but this one exhibits moderate water staining. However, it still displays well.

Dexter B. Ladd was a 20 year old Clerk from Boston when he enlisted in Company H, 23rd Massachusetts Infantry on September 2, 1861. While he was with the regiment it saw action at Roanoke Island, New Bern, Batchelder’s Creek, Whitehall, Kinston, Arrowfield Church, Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. At some point Ladd was reduced to ranks as the record says he was mustered out as a Private on September 28, 1864. At some time after his service Ladd moved to Maryland where he died on September 25, 1910 and was buried in Loudon Park National Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
