This is a slip of white paper on which is written the countersign for the day noted. All persons approaching a guard in camp would have to give this countersign to be allowed to pass. The countersign was especially important at night when visibility was poor.

The paper meas. approx. 8.00 x 5.00 inches and has written on it in bold period ink “COUNTERSIGN THURSDAY MAY 1, 1862 ‘FLORENCE.’” The surface of the paper is very clean but two of the corners are dog-eared. There are also one vertical and one horizontal fold line.
