Discharge document dated August 5, 1865. Measures 20 x 27”, with eight interior folds, separated in half along center horizontal crease line. Exhibits light yellowing, & with scattered chipping along fold lines and outer extremities. Else VG, with inked entries entirely legible.
This standard document contains the 79 names of all who mustered with the company on February 18, 1862, and records their disposition through the unit’s mustering out in Syracuse, August 5, 1865. [Mustered in by Capt. Reese / 18 February 1862 / Mustered out by Captain M. Kirby, Cmdg. at discharge.]
The 97th New York Infantry [“Conklin Rifles”] was mustered in Booneville, NY, on February 1862. It served w/ Pope’s Army of Virginia, participating in the 1862 Valley Campaign [in pursuit of Jackson.], and the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Transferred to the 1st Corps in Sept. 1862, the unit went on to participate in all the campaigns and major actions of the Army of the Potomac through Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Grant’s 1864 Overland Campaign. During service it lost 181 men killed and mortally wounded and 157 by disease for a total of 338.
