For period 31 Dec/1861 to 30 April 1862. Signed by “Gustavus M. Palmer, Capt. Commanding.” Standard U.S. Government Muster form, measuring 20 x 27”, with 8 folds, nearly separated along center horizontal fold. Contains 69 recorded names. Exhibits slight yellowing, with scattered chipping along fold lines and outer extremities. Else VG, with inked entries entirely legible.

The 97th New York Infantry [“Conklin Rifles”] was mustered in Booneville, NY, on February 1862. During the period covered by this muster it was posted in the Washington, DC, defenses. It would shortly be attached to Pope’s Army of Virginia, and participating in the 1862 Valley Campaign [in pursuit of Jackson] and Battle Cedar Mountain. Transferred to the 1st Corps in Sept. 1862, the unit went on to participate in all the major Campaigns and major actions of the Army of the Potomac through Lee’s surrender at Appomattox—including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Grant’s 1864 Overland Campaign. During service it lost 181 killed and mortally wounded and 157 by disease for a total of 338.
