Dated “Walhalla, SC, Aug 16, 1865”. 1pp. pre-printed form, measuring 3” x 7.75”. In two pieces, taped tastefully together, exhibiting light yellowing & soiling. Text as follows:
“I J.M. Richy, do solemnly swear in the presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support and defend the Constitution of the Unite States and the Union of the States thereunder, and that I will in like manner abide by and faithfully support all laws and Proclamations which have been made during the existing Rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves. SO HELP ME GOD.”
Sworn, subscribed, and signed by Richey and Union Provost Marshal, Captain Niles G. Parker, of the 33rd U.S. Colored Troops [USCT].
The 12th South Carolina served with McGowan’s Brigade, a brigade that suffered highly casualties than any other in the Confederate Army, in addition to being conspicuous on every field of battle which the Army of Northern Virginia was engaged, Gettysburg included.
Pvt. Joseph Richey was from the Abbeville district of South Carolina. A farmer by occupation, Richey was 18 years of age and 5’ 6” in height at the time he enlisted in August 1861. He was discharged in September 1862 for wounds received at the Battle of Sharpsburg [Antietam]. At the close of the war he was compelled to sign an Oath of Allegiance due to earlier Confederate service. [Union Provost Marshal Parker had served earlier as a sergeant in the 1st Mass. Cavalry before accepting a commission as Captain in the 33rd USCT].
Included in the packet are two penciled notes by Richey, both post-war, as well as an envelope cover addressed to “Mrs. Sarry Richey, Whetstone Po., Oconey [Oconee] Co.”
An intriguing South Carolina “Oath of Allegiance” packet. Accompanied by a brief amount of internet research material.
