Pre-printed pass filled out in period ink; measures 6 3/8” x 4 ¼”.  Petersburg Rail Road pass issued by the Confederate War Department, Richmond, granting permission to Cadet Mason to visit Yorkville, SC.

Dated July 4th, 1864.  “Permission is granted Cadet Mason to visit Yorkville S.C. upon honor not to communicate in writing or verbally, for publication, any fact ascertained, which, if known to the enemy, might be injurious to the Confederate States of America. (Subject to the discretion of the military authorities.)”  Initialed “JBZ”, Provost Marshall.

At verso:  “I, Cadet Mason, do solemnly swear or affirm, that I will bear true faith and yield obedience to the Confederate States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against their enemies. / Richmond, July 4th, 1864.”

Issued during the early stages of the Siege of Petersburg (June 9, 1864 to March 25, 1865).  Early paper repair of loss at top margin, and later archival mend of fold separations.
