This pre-printed General Order is No. 346 and relates the details of the trial of Private George Woolfolk who was a member of Company H, 10th Kentucky Cavalry CSA and who was found within Union lines at Lyon, Kentucky. The specifications of the case are thus:

“That the said George Woolfolk, an enemy of the Governments, a Private of Company ‘H,’ Tenth Kentucky Regiment, in the service of the so-called Confederate Army, on or about the 24th day of April, 1863, was arrested in Lyon county, Kentucky, where he was found secretly within the lines of the United States forces, in some unknown capacity, in violation of General Orders, No. 38, Department of the Ohio, and contrary to the laws of war; he by his presence being able to obtain information and communicate the same to the enemy.”

Woolfolk was found guilty and sentenced to be shot. The last paragraph of the order commutes the sentence by order of President Lincoln and allows Woolfolk the choice to take the oath of allegiance or be exchanged as a prisoner of war.

The item is in good to excellent condition with only four small holes where it was once bound into a book.

George William Woolfolk was born in 1829 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was married in 1851 and had six children. As noted above he served as a Private in the 10th Regiment of the Kentucky Calvary, CSA. George died in Greneda, Mississippi on September 23, 1878 at the age of 49. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah, Kentucky.
