Dated “Head Quarters Army of the Potomac/ Camp near Falmouth VA. May 9th 1863. “1 page, in ink, 12.5 x 8”. Signed:  “By Command of Major Gen; Hooker/ (sgd) L. F. Barstow/ A.A.G./ Head Quarter 1st Brig 1st Div 3rd Corps/ May 10th 1863/ Official/  F Birney/ Capt & A.A.G.”  W/reverse endorsement: “Hd Qrs Army of Potomac/ May 9/ special orders No. 135 Extract/ Calling for Captured Flags to be sent to Hd Qrs AofP.”

Text:  “Extract” / Par I. Corps and other independent Commanders will at once send to these Head Quarters the flags captured by their respective commands in the battles. Also a statement of property taken from the enemy. The property will be transferred to the Staff Department to which it appertains.”

A curious “special order” from Gen Hooker’s headquarters. Written only a few days after his disastrous defeat and withdrawal from Chancellorsville, one wonders how many flags he expected to collect.
