Dated Provost Marshal’s Office, 14th District, Harrisburg, PA, August 12, 1864. Pre-printed form. 2pp., noting the enlistment of “John Henry Thomas ‘Colonel” “for the period of one (1) year”, and his mustering in “for the purpose of securing Local Bounty, and so that he appears on the Muster and Descriptive Rolls as forwarded to the Adjutant General of the United States.” Signed in ink by “Jno. Kay Klement”, who certifies that the local bounty for “Bern Upper Tsp Berks Co 6th sub of 8th Cong. Dist. Pa” has been been paid by “Gauser and Pottiger” for said township to the above named recruit.” Adjutant’s pre-printed endorsement appears on the reverse.
Certificate exhibits slight chipping on lower margins, left and right. Else VG plus, and perfectly legible.
John H. Thomas was born in Warren, VA. At age 20 he was a brown-eyed black laborer, measuring 5’7.5” in height. Enlisted in the service on bounty, Thomas was assigned to the 45th US Col’d Infy, which was organized in Philadelphia between 13 June and August 19, 1864. The unit was assigned to the 22 Army Corps and stood garrison duty at Arlington Heights, VA., later transferred to the Dept. of Texas, where it was discharged from service November, 1865.
