PATRIOTIC LINCOLN ENVELOPES, DATED 1861

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 450-74

A collection of five patriotic envelopes of Lincoln defeating secession. This is a complete series in five rounds. Each envelope features cartoon drawings of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis and is titled at the top of each envelope, “CHAMPION PRIZE ENVELOPE – LINCOLN & DAVIS IN 5 ROUNDS”. The bottom left corner of each is marked, “PUBLISHED BY J. H. TINGLEY, 1524 FULTON ST. N. Y.” Bottom right of each is marked, “ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS IN THE YEAR 1861 BY I. S. PEIRCE, CLERKS OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF N. Y.” The drawings feature Lincoln as the victor in the ring against Davis and the Southern states.

Cartoon caricatures such as these were very popular during the Civil War. These political sketches began to appear in the weekly papers of the day, as well as stationery, prints and paintings. For the people living through the war, there was not much to laugh at, so in the midst of trying to survive such tragedy and hardship, these drawings served as a way to reduce the reality of war into a manageable proportion.
