Dated Wilcox County, ,Alabama, 24 January 1844, signed by acting Justice of the Peace, Moses Whitted. 3 pp., in ink, on unlined paper. Exhibits fold-marks, and a handful of miniscule smudges. Otherwise VG, clean and entirely legible.
This document contains the report of the Commissioners appointed by the Wilcox County Court to appraise and make a division of the slave property of the Hugh Young, recently deceased. The report appraises the worth of Young’s 39 slaves at $14,825, and divides them in seven lots, listing each slave by name and individual price. Each lot of slaves [ranging from 4 to 8] contains names and values of individual slaves, individual values range from $125 [for Eliza] to $800 [Peter], with each lot valued at $2000 plus. These lots are to be distributed among Hugh Young’s heirs, whose names listed alongside each lot.
Fascinating document. Valuable for both slave genealogy and the genealogy of Hugh Young family descendants. Invites further research.

Text: “Richmond______, 18___/ Received of_______ Negro Slave named __the right and title of said slave warrant__ and defend against the claims of all persons whatsoever, and likewise warrant__ sound and healthy./ As witness…..hand and seal.” [jp]
