Letter reads, “Lieutenant E.C. Tillotson one of the 14th Regiment of OH. I having applied for a certificate to extend his leave of absence. I do hereby certify that I have carefully examined this officer and find, that he is afflicted with Neuraligia principally of the Ischiatic region, and that in consequence thereof he is in my opinion unfit for duty and unable to travel. I further declare my belief that he will not be able to resume his duties in a less period than twenty days.
Dated at Toledo, O. June 26, 1864

D.E. Merrill Justice of the Peace in and for Lucas County, Ohio”.
Ebenezer C. Tillotson enlisted at the age of 31 on 8/15/61 as 1st Sgt. On that date he mustered into Co. B, 14th OH Infantry. On 6/16/62 he was transferred to Co. E. Promoted to 2nd Lt. on 10/16/62 and transferred to Co. K. Died of disease on 9/24/64 at Lookout Mountain, TN (died at Summit Hospital). He is buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Letter measures 9 ¾” x 7 -7/8. Paper has slightly yellowed with age and some surface dirt is present. There are two creases from where letter was folded. There is a red five cent tax stamp which has been initialed and dated June 26, 1864. [sm]
