Very nice conditioned pre-printed muster roll filled out in legible ink for men assigned to the Montpelier, Vermont General Hospital. Roll contains the names and signature, or marks, of four men assigned to the hospital as nurses. Roll is dated October 1865.

At bottom the roll is signed “HENRY JAMES” SURGEON “U. S. V. IN CHARGE.” Henry James was the surgeon of the 3rd Vermont Infantry. Immediately after the battle of Gettysburg when Dr. Johnathan Letterman left town with the army in pursuit of Lee, it was Henry James who was assigned by Letterman to gather, organize and treat the wounded of the battle.

Document is clean and bright with 1 horizontal and 5 vertical fold lines. Paper is strong with no separations.   [AD]
