This is an undated Civil War-era document detailing Major General George H. Thomas’ Department of the Cumberland. This probably dates to sometime in 1864 as Thomas didn’t take command of the department until very late 1863. Six sheets (12 pages) measure 7 ¾” x 12 ½” and are full of beautiful pen & ink hand writing. The lined paper features a raised “water mark” of a steam locomotive and the name “HOLYOKE, CO.” in the top corner of each sheet. The document is an order of battle listing Corps, Divisions, Brigades, and Regiments. The document includes the 4th, 14th, 11th, 12th Corps; the Cavalry and Artillery; the “Unassigned Troops South of Duck River”; and those units assigned to the District of Nashville. The sheets are bound with a single loop of cloth tape tied in a knot.
Some soiling to cover page. Several folds which do not detract. Paper is in good condition (not brittle) with only the cover sheet having a tear along the “spine”. Again, this features the most attractive handwriting in which every line is clear and easily read. [jet]
