PATRIOTIC ENVELOPE

$20.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: L5988

Patriotic letter envelope from the Civil War.  Unused.  Measures 3” x 5 ½”.  Image on left edge is scene of Jeff Davis walking a tight rope over a water fall. On the left end of rope is a soldier and the US Capitol; on the right is a man with hatchet chopping the rope. Caption reads “This modern Blondin leaves but one impression Upon the mind of every calm spectator: How easily we circumvent Secession  Must now be clearly seen by this arch-traitor.”  Printed in brown ink.  A copyright line also runs along the left edge.

The American Civil War precipitated one of the largest expansions in the U.S. postal service. Between the commerce generated by the war and the correspondence between soldiers and their families, the use of the postal system boomed. One of the curious effects of its increased popularity was the production of these patriotic envelopes, a daily reminder of the division from which the country suffered.  [jet]
