PATRIOTIC ENVELOPE

$20.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 558-145

Colorful patriotic letter envelope from the Civil War.  Unused, but had back removed…this is the front of envelope only.  Measures 3” x 5 ½”.  Colorful image on left edge of crossed First National Confederate flags with the statement “THIS FLAG WILL RUN” below.  Nice color images; paper is discolored from previously being mounted.  Creasing along left side, with tears along one vertical crease.

The American Civil War precipitated one of the largest expansions in the U.S. postal service. Between the commerce generated by the war and the correspondence between soldiers and their families, the use of the postal system boomed. One of the curious effects of its increased popularity was the production of these patriotic envelopes, a daily reminder of the division from which the country suffered.  [jet]
