Tri-fold leather covered book of lined paper contains the roster of Co. “L”, 4th Virginia Infantry. Hand inscribed at different times in both pencil and ink. Lists the names of the officers and soldiers, and states who was killed, wounded, discharged or deserted with the name of the battle it occurred at. Twelve bound pages feature the inscriptions, as well as five loose pages which are folded in a pocket in the back of the book.

Back cover features the signature of L.M. Schaeffer of Blacksburg, VA, who was a member of Co. “L”. Luther Melanothon Schaeffer enlisted on July 16, 1861 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “L”, 4th VA. He is listed as detailed on February 19, 1863 as a drummer and on the rolls on October 15, 1864. After the war, he worked for a company that produced tombstones and monuments. His business card is tucked in the pocket at the back of the book.

The 4th VA Infantry was organized on April 24, 1861 and mustered out on April 9, 1865. They were part of the Stonewall Brigade.

Measures 3 ¾” x 8 ¼” x ½”. Leather is supple, shows light wear and fading in areas, is splitting at the spine, with a small section torn at the lower spine.  [sm]
