Script is printed on yellow cardstock. Front has wording that reads, “153rd REG’T N.Y. VOLUNTEERS, GOOD FOR 25 CENTS IN SUTLERS STORES ONLY H.M. GALE, SUTLER.” Reverse has an image of a number 25. Measures 6/8” by 1 6/8’.

Since government issued coinage was scarce during the Civil War, sutlers often conducted transactions using a particular type of Civil War token known as a sutler token, as well as paper sutler script as in this example.  [sl]
