As the Civil War dragged on, patriotic songs such as this became very popular. This song sheet was published in 1863 by Winner & Co. of Philadelphia. Words and music by Alice Hawthorne.
First verse of song reads, “Yes, I would the war were over, Would the cruel work were done, With my country undivided, And the battle fought and won. Let the contest now before us, Be decided by the sword, For the war cannot be ended, Till the Union is restored. With my country united, And many states in one, With my country still united, And the many states in one. Yes, I would the war were over, Would the cruel work were done, Yes, I would the war were over, Would the cruel work were done.” Three verses total.
Measures 10 ¼” x 13 ¼”. 6 pages. Yellowing has occurred, with areas of spotting. Pages are tightly stitched together. Shows chipping at left side. [sl]
