Patriotic songs such as this became very popular during the Civil War. This song sheet was published in 1864 by Horace Waters of New York. Words by William P. Wallace, music by Chas. E. Ballard. Center features a lithograph image of D.P. Morton, Governor of Indiana.
First verse of song reads, “My comrades dear, draw near to me, And take my parting last goodbye, Thou’lt tell my sister, mother dear, How like a soldier I did die, I see her now she’s waiting still, Yes, waiting for the news from me, Oh! Tell her of my parting words, My country dear, I die for thee.” Three verses total.
Measures 10 ¼” x 13”. Yellowing has occurred, with areas of spotting. Pages have separated from each other. Shows chipping and small tears at left side. [jp]

This German silver bugle is made with a double-coil tube fitted with ferrules joining the sections and has a bell garland. It matches very closely a horn made by Joerdans of NY, illustrated as Figure 10 in Chris Nelson’s classic article on Civil… (2023-2833). Learn More »
