This booklet containing the Confederate President’s inaugural speech was circulated soon after the ceremony in 1861. Cover reads, “INAUGURAL ADDRESS OF PRESIDENT DAVIS, DELIVERED AT THE CAPITOL, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1861, AT 1 O’CLOCK, P.M. / MONTGOMERY, ALA.: SHORTER & REID PRINTERS, ADVERTISER OFFICE. 1861.” Excerpt from first page reads, “Our present condition, achieved in a manner unprecedented in the history of nations, illustrates the American ideal that Governments rest upon the consent of the governed, and that it is the right of the people to alter or abolish Governments whenever they become destructive of the ends for which they were established”.

Booklet contains a total of eight pages which are glued together at the left edge. Binding is tight. Pages have yellowed with age, with back page showing much darker yellowing. Shows one very small tear at the top left corner and a small chip at lower left edge.  Totally readable.  [sl]
