The cover was directed to Eaton in Washington, D.C., with 3 cent pre-printed stamp. Cancellation is partial with town in Wisconsin unknown. Date Dec. 14. Eaton enlisted July 2, 1862 as Chaplain and mustered out July 3, 1865.

The 7^th was part of the famous Iron Brigade. The regiment fought at Catlett’s Station, Charles City, Falmouth, Rappahannock Station between May and August 1862; followed by 2^nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Laurel Hill, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon RR, Hatcher’s Run, Gravely Run and Five Forks.  [ld]
