Paper ad meas. approx. 4.50 x 2.75 inches showing two women, one on horseback in a blue riding dress and black top hat with another woman, similarly dressed, dismounted and watering her horse at a trough by a rock outcropping. The horse and most of the background are done in a burnt orange color.
The bottom border is white with black lettering that reads “A. G. SPEXARTH IMPORTER AND DEALER IN THE LATEST BREECH-LOADING RIFLES, AND SHOT GUNS, POWDER, SHOT, WADS, FISHING TACKLE, ETC. ASTORIA, OREGON.”
Ad is in overall nice condition.
August G. Spexarth, Sr., was a prominent Astoria businessman in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Born in Germany in 1848, Spexarth came to Astoria in 1874 and opened a general store. His business was destroyed in the downtown fire of 1883, but he rebuilt and went back into business. He had a long and successful career in a number of ventures, including sporting goods, firearms, jewelry and other merchandise. In 1927 at the age of 79, he became a Port of Astoria commissioner and subsequently became president of the Port Commission. He died of pneumonia in August 2, 1934, at the age of 86. [ad]
