Small pre-printed document meas. approx. 6.00 x 2.75 inches. Document is filled out in period ink and is dated “WYTHE COUNTY, VA. JAN. 16, 1864” and shows that $30 was paid to the family of Moses Smart who served in Company B, 51st Virginia Infantry.

Smart was described as being 5’ 4” tall with a ruddy complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He enlisted on February 6, 1863 as a Private and was detailed as a brigade teamster on June 30, 1863. Smart was captured at Waynesboro, Virginia on March 2, 1865 and was confined at Fort Delaware from March 12 to June 22, 1865.

Reverse bears the mark of one Dorthea Smart who was either Moses’ mother or wife.
