Preprinted document dated January 1, 1863 and filled out in period ink. The document shows that Wythe County pays $5.00 to Mrs. Martha Smith for supplies. The document states that she is part of the family of William Smith who is serving in the 51st Virginia.

Reverse of the document has an “x” with the notation “MARTHA SMITH, HER MARK.”

William Smith enlisted in Company C, 51st Virginia Infantry at Wytheville on July 20, 1861. At the time he is described as being 5’ 3” tall with a light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. Smith was captured at Waynesboro, Virginia on March 2, 1865. He was confined at Fort Delaware until June of 1865 when he was released.

The 51st Virginia was raised in August of 1861 and served in several different Confederate armies. They saw service at Fort Donelson, Missionary Ridge, New Market, Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor, Monocacy, Fort Stevens, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek.  [AD]
