LOT OF CLOTHING RECEIPTS FOR 46TH PENNSYLVANIA

These five documents are all filled out in period ink and signed by five different Company commanders of the 46th Pennsylvania. All are dated in October of 1862 and were probably made out by the Regimental Quartermaster Lieutenant George B. Cadwallader. Some of the items listed on each form are Infantry trousers, drawers, stockings, shoes, forage caps, wool blankets, over coats, dress coats, canteens, axe, spade, pick, tents, shelter halves, and for some reason one lists a Cavalry shell jacket and another 2 Cavalry overcoats.

All are very readable and in good condition. Each is signed at bottom by the Company Commander. The Companies and their commanders are:

Company I 1st Lt. John Care-enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D on September 2, 1861, promoted to 1st Lt. of Company I, March 14, 1862, promoted Captain August 17, 1863. Resigned June 10, 1864.

Company C 1st Lt. William H. Stolzenbach-enlisted as a Private in Company C on August 17, 1861, promoted Sergeant September 4, 1861, 2nd Lt. September 5, 1861, 1st Lt. March 4, 1862 and Captain November 11, 1862. He was mustered out on July 16, 1865.

Field & Staff 1st Lt. William B. Weber-commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Company A, August 14, 1861, promoted 1st Lt. September 27, 1861, appointed Adjutant November 1, 1862 and Captain on February 11, 1863. He was resigned February 8, 1865.

Company D 1st Lt. John W. Geiger-commissioned 1st Lt. in Company D on September 2, 1861. Dismissed July 6, 1863 for being absent without leave.

Company E Capt. Sefra T. Ketrer-commissioned 2nd Lt. of Company E on September 4, 1861, promoted Captain September 17, 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Peachtree Creek in front of Atlanta on July 20 1864 and died of wounds on the 21st.

The 46th Pennsylvania was at Kernstown, Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and was with Sherman’s Army in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and in the Carolinas.
