“The United States Volunteer Service. The Presidents Thanks and Certificate of Honorable Service.” Measuring 13.5”x 16”, dated “Executive Mansion/ Washington city”, in ink 15 December 1864”, signed with facsimile signatures by Abraham Lincoln & Sec’y of War Stanton. This document was awarded to volunteers from “the states of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin who had answered the call of their respective Governors to assist in the recent campaigns of General Sherman in victories over rebel forces in Georgia under command Johnson and Hood.” Exhibits light wear, soiling, & fold-marks, with one 5” inch tear from a margin neatly taped on the reverse. Else VG, and entirely legible. Signed with facsimile signatures of President Lincoln & Sec’y War Stanton.

Doran was a resident of Wilmington, IL when he enlisted as a private on 5/19/62; mustered into Co. G on 6/21/64.  Mustered out 10/14/64 at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL.

The 138th Illinois was mustered in at Camp Wood , Quincy, Ill., for 100 days service on June 21, 1864. Stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, during the month of July, the unit was mustered out October 13, 1864. During service it lost 13 men by disease.

An unusual service certificate—issued to a regiment of 100-day volunteers from Illinois who enlisted to assist in Sherman’s 1864 Campaign against Johnston & Hood, but who spent a month at Ft. Leavenworth instead, losing 13 to disease. Excellent service certificate collectible.
