The 1-3/4 inch ovals are both painted on ivory and mounted in a small decorative metal frame. The picture of Mary has a ring attached so it can be worn around the neck. Both pieces have a small crack that runs the entire length. They are mounted in 6-inch wooden black and gold frames.
With the ivories is a letter written in 1962. The typed letter is from Kay and Bill Sweets, Vermont Antique dealers. It states that the miniatures were the property of Catherine Mary Ball at the time of her death. They were portraits of Miss Ball’s grandparents, Richard Henry Ball and Catherine Flint Ball, descents of Mary Bell who was the wife of Augustine Washington and mother of George Washington.
