Print comes housed in what looks to be its original frame. It meas. approx. 23.50 inches long x 20.00 inches wide. Frame is of wood with gold gilt paint. Interior border is beaded while the exterior is scalloped. Interior border is chipped in several places and the exterior in one.
The black mat with gold trim looks to be painted on the underside of the glass that covers the print. Mat and gold border are in nice condition.
The print itself shows Nottingham Castle at the top of a rocky mount with a glimpse of the town on the far side of the mount and a grove of trees with some mounted men and dogs on the near side. The predominant colors are varying shades of green, brown and white. All colors are good. The actual print size is approx. 16.00 x 12.50 inches. Print has some light surface dirt from age and storage. The area of the sky has several light water stains but nothing major.
The lower border of the print has the Nottingham Coat of Arms at center flanked by “NOTTINGHAM CASTLE.” The rest of the script reads “THE SEAT OF HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE TO WHOM THIS PLATE IS RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBED BY HIS GRACES MOST DEDICATED HUMBLE SERVANT JAMES FITTLER.”
The print was published in London 28 February 1803 by A. Molteno.
Reverse has masking tape holding the backing in place. [AD]
