This is a page separated from a scrapbook assembled by Pvt. Stanton P. Allen. The scrapbook was entitled “Down In Dixie” and the pages contain newspaper clippings run in the Troy (New York) Daily Times in the 1880s. Allen submitted the stories to the newspaper of his experiences during the Civil War. Allen then clipped the printed columns, pasting them into this scrapbook that interwove his writings with his sketches. The scrapbook permitted him to reorganize his memories for the publication of a book-length memoir: “Down in Dixie: Life in a Cavalry Regiment in the War Days, from the Wilderness to Appomattox” in 1894, that relied upon the scrapbooks. All of the pieces are pasted, front and back, to each scrapbook page. Another complete volume (listed as vol. 4) of Allen’s scrapbooks is housed in the Clements Library, University of Michigan.

Stanton P. Allen was from Berlin, New York and originally enlisted in September 1863 with the 21st New York Cavalry, stating he was 19 years old. He was soon found out to be only 14 and sent home. Determined to enlist, he went to Massachusetts and mustered in with the 1st Mass. Cavalry in December or 1863. He remained with that regiment until mustering out in June of 1865.

The original scrapbook page offered here features clippings of a story “Planning the Run Away” and an original sketch on one side and another set of the newspaper clippings, “A Question of Age” and “Thinking It Over” on the other. On the backside, Allen added details to a newspaper illustration. The original sketch shows a soldier in uniform standing before rows of tents.

Accompanying this original page are copies of the other pages from this scrapbook, including the front cover, showing hand written title, and an 1863 photograph of Allen that was pasted to the inside front cover. This picture of Allen shows him and a companion, in uniform, as members of “Co. I, 3rd Battn, First Mass. Cav.”  [jet]
