Very nice hand colored lithograph dated 1862 showing the camp of the 113th New York Volunteers around an earthen fort named Fort Pennsylvania. In front of the walls of the fort are several rows of “A” tents along with two Sibley tents and several wall tents. At center is a US flag floating from a tall pole. Several soldiers can be seen in the camp and in the center near the flag pole are a couple of ladies. The walls of the fort are seen in the background behind the camp with sentries posted on the walls and the fort gate visible and open. There are also several wooden outbuildings.

The fine print under the view says it was published in the year “1862” and the views caption reads “FORT PENNSYLVANIA HEAD QUARTERS OF THE 113TH REGT. N.Y.S.V. COL. O. L. MORRICEE, COMM’DG.”

Print is housed in a modern wood frame and is single matted. Frame meas. approx. 20.00 x 15.50 inches with the actual scene meas. 10.00 x 5.50 inches. Framed with conservation glass to protect from damage from ultraviolet light.

The 113th New York was assigned to the Defenses of Washington on the north side of the Potomac. On December 10, 1862 it was converted to the 7th New York Heavy Artillery. In 1864 it was assigned to the Army of the Potomac as infantry and saw fighting from Spotsylvania through Petersburg being engaged in 89 battles and skirmishes. The regiment lost 295 officers and men killed and died of wounds and another 374 men by disease.  [ad]
