Portrait miniatures first appeared in the 1520s, at the French and English courts. In the 18th century, portrait miniatures were painted with watercolor on ivory, which had now become relatively inexpensive. Portrait miniatures were now an established genteel pastime, and often used as personal mementos or as jewelry or snuff box covers. Miniatures remained highly popular until the development of daguerreotypes and photography in the mid-19th century.

At the end of the century, however, there was a brief revival of miniature portraiture, marked by the establishment in 1896 of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters in England, and the 1899 foundation of the American Society of Miniature Painters.  [sl/sm]
