These chromolithographs were done by Elijah C. Middleton in 1861

Lithograph shows President Washington in a dark civilian suit and Mrs. Washington in a white wrap and mobcap. Both lithographs are based on paintings done by Gilbert Stuart. The lithograph of the President has a paper label dated January 9, 1863 with a facsimile autograph of Mr. Edward Everett attesting to the fact that the lithograph is true to the portrait done by Stuart.

The print of the President is clear and bright while the image of the First Lady looks a little subdued in color but otherwise good. These lithographs were done on paper and then attached to a canvas backing which was attached to a stretcher and then housed in an ornate gilt frame common to the period.

The reverse of the canvas on each is marked “WARRANTED OIL COLORS. ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS, IN THE YEAR 1861 BY E. C. MIDDLETON IN THE CLERK’S OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT COURT FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF OHIO, CINCINNATI”

The wood frame is covered with plaster which was used to form the scrollwork decorations on the edge and the beaded inner border. Once the decoration was done the entire frame was painted with gold gilt. Both of the frames are in good condition with minor scattered chipping in places but nothing major.

Each item meas. approx. 19.00 x 23.00 inches.   [ad]
