TERRA COTTA PORTRAIT BUST OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN BY AMERICAN SCULPTOR JO DAVIDSON

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 337-286

Measuring 11 inches tall, not including its rectangular base, this portrait bust is signed on the reverse “Jo Davidson 1943.” This expressive bust retains most of its original painted finish with very minor wear and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Weight 5 lbs. 5 oz.

A prolific and popular sculptor, Davidson (1883-1952) was born in New York City, studied sculpture in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1907 and returned to the U.S. had his first solo show in 1911. He won the National Academy of Design’s Maynard Prize in 1934 and in 1944 was elected to the National Academy.  A retrospective of his work was held in 1947. He specialized in portrait busts and his resume includes a long list of commissions and exhibitions. In this case, the simplicity of the bust complements Lincoln’s own rough-hewn exterior and gets to his character as well.  [sr]
