This wonderful soldier’s sketch is done in pencil and is titled in the lower left corner “BRACKETT’S QUARTERS NEAR THE ‘BLICK HOUSE’ ON THE WELDON RR VA. AUG. 22d/64”

Drawing shows a large fly draped over a ridgepole supported by two “Y” shaped tree branches. The tent is pitched in a small clearing with trees in the background and with one or two stumps nearby. The artist has drawn in the details of the guy ropes and stakes as well as the interior of the tent. The tent holds two cots with short legs and two camp chairs on which two men are seated. One looks to be smoking a pipe while the other reads a newspaper. Written lightly under the fellow smoking the pipe is “BRACKETT” while under the other fellow is the name “FITCH.”

Drawing meas. approx. 7.00 x 4.50 inches long and is framed with a single white mat housed in very nice old gold gilt frame. The frame is decorated with laurel leaves and an interior dot pattern. It meas. approx. 17.50 inches long x 15.00 inches wide x 1.75 inches deep.

Reverse has a modern paper backing and wire.

The Weldon Railroad ran south from Petersburg and for a while it was the focus of the Union army’s attempt to lay siege to the city. The Blick House is located near Globe Tavern in an area that saw heavy fighting during the battle for possession of the Weldon Railroad which the Northern forces eventually captured.  [ad]

NOTE: The frame does contain glass. See our policy for shipment of framed items.
