$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: L14481

Broadside is printed in black ink on white paper. It meas. approx. 13.25 x 19.25 inches. Emblazoned across the top in letters 1.25 inches high is “TO ARMS!” The subsequent lines implore the people of Northern Ohio to come to the aid of Kentucky. It reminds the people of the War of 1812 when Kentuckians came to the aid of the people of Ohio.  It then goes on to explain that the recruits will rendezvous at Camp Croghan in Fremont, Ohio. The appeal is signed R. P. Buckland and is dated October 5, 1861.

There is some foxing along the edges of the document, mostly at bottom and left side. The bottom right corner has two small tears and there are three horizontal and three vertical fold lines. All printing is legible. The overall condition is good and bright. The item would look wonderful framed.

The 72nd Ohio was raised between October 1861 and February 1862 and left the state under the command of Colonel Ralph P. Buckland whose name is affixed to the broadside offered here. The regiment’s first action was the battle of Shiloh in April of 1862. It then went on to the Siege of Corinth after which it took part in the Vicksburg Campaign being engaged at Jackson and the assaults on Vicksburg on May 19 and 22, 1863. In February of 1864 it took part in the expedition to the Tallahatchie River which was part of General Sherman’s Meridian Campaign. The regiment was veteranized and was furloughed home. After their return in June of 1864 they were engaged at Brice’s Crossroads and later in the year at Nashville. In 1865 the regiment was sent to Louisiana where it besieges Spanish Fort near Mobile, Alabama. The regiment was mustered out at Vicksburg on September 11, 1865. During their service the regiment lost 404 men killed, wounded and captured.
