Margaret "Maggie" Mitchell was a mid-Victorian American actress who in 1861 achieved national stardom in a play titled "Fanchon the Crickett", a sentimental comedy adapted from a story by George Sand. In this role she was seen by luminaries such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Abraham Lincoln. Her career lasted into the 1890s, and, by the time of her death in 1918, Mitchell was a venerated figure in American theater circles.
