Dated July 18, 1863. Black and white document, 10.5 x 15” mounted on heavy, weathered beige card, in period frame with inner decorative trim, measuring 14.5 x 18.25”. With reverse cardboard backing, covered by masking tape—with hangwire.

In terms of condition, the broadside exhibits light fold-marks, and moderate wrinkling, with light water stain on the lower right corner. Otherwise in very good condition and entirely legible. The inner frame trim is chipped in spots and all but missing at the corners. Otherwise VG, and exuding considerable character.

Broadside text:

“SPECIAL TOWN MEETING! / By virtue of a Warrant directed to me, by Robert Wilson, Town Clerk of the Town of Johnson, the qualified electors of said Town, qualified to vote on any proposition to impose a tax, or for the expenditure of money, are hereby, notified and warned to assemble in Town Meeting, at the/ TOWN HOUSE, in said Johnston, on/ WEDNESDAY, THE 22ND DAY OF JULY, A.D. 1863, at 2 o’clock, P.M.; then and there to vote on a proposition to/ RELIEVE THE FAMILIES/ and dependants of those/ PERSONS WHO ARE DRAFTED/ INTO THE MILITARY SERVICE OF THE United States, from said town.

And also to provide for the relief of the families of those persons now in the service of the United States, as heretofore, and to make the necessary appropriations for carrying the above objects into effect.

Also, to empower the Town Treasurer to borrow money on the credit of the Town, to carry the above propositions into effect./ Wm H. Mathewson/ Town Serg’t/ Johnson, July 18, 1863.”
