This totally original, visually stunning Civil War recruiting broadside represents the pinnacle of the genre. The wonderful woodcut at the broadside’s center depicts a cavalryman atop his mount, complete in Hardee hat and raised saber. The vignette is remarkable for its energy and intensity of spirit.

The content gives classic insight into the period requiring a special force with a "Height of not less than 5 ft. 9 in. -- Weight not more than 165 lbs.” The Union was looking for cavalry soldiers whose size was more imposing than the average soldier of the day. Put these soldiers on their mounts and they would strike the fear of God in the enemy.

This unit became known as the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry and was recruited in late 1861, the period in which this broadside was printed. Recruitment was for General Butler’s expeditionary force into the Carolina’s and ultimately New Orleans. The force was prominent in many important battles throughout the War.

Adding to the poster’s uniqueness and provenance is the period label affixed to the piece naming Pickering D. Allen as the recruiting officer. Such labels were extremely rare. Lt Allen was commissioned on Dec 27, 1861 and killed at Brashear City, LA. on June 2, 1863. This is a quintessential Civil War recruiting broadside, with the content and imagery to capture the imagination of any observer.

Frame measures overall 33 ½” x 42”; visible portion of the broadside is 20 ½” x 28”.
