This extremely rare and likely unique surviving original recruiting broadside was actually posted in Philadelphia’s 24th Ward shortly before the Battle of Gettysburg. With its’ patriotic message …“NO COMPROMISE WITH TRAITORS, and No Argument but the Cannon’s Mouth” carried by the imposing graphic of the American eagle, it answered the call to raise troops to defend their homeland against Robert E Lee and his advancing army.

Early in the summer of 1863, a Rebel invasion of Pennsylvania appeared imminent. The Confederates had occupied Chambersburg and Gettysburg and when it was discovered that the main body of their forces had actually crossed the Potomac, a proclamation was issued by Gov. Curtin on June 26, calling for 60,000 men at once to be mustered, with this broadside posted in the 24th Ward. A portion of these emergency regiments were deployed to Harrisburg as a line of defense around Philadelphia should Lee successfully advance beyond Gettysburg. As events unfolded, the Union was successful in stopping Lee’s army at Gettysburg,

Most of the few surviving Civil War recruiting broadsides are housed in private institutions, with the few that come to market being highly desired. Among those most sought after are those with captivating graphics that are associated to significant events that occurred during the War. This broadside is certainly a representative example.

Frame measures 35” x 45”; visible portion of the broadside is 21 ¾” x 30 ½”.
