Commission appoints Joshua Davage Bell as 2nd Lieutenant in the Tippecanoe Guards to date from June 7, 1861. The document is pre-printed and filled in with ink that is still strong and readable. The bottom of the document still has the affixed paper seal and is signed by the wartime Governor of Iowa Samuel J. Kirkwood.

Item is in a modern frame and meas. approx. 13.25 x 9.50 inches. The surface of the item has light dirt as well as light fold lines.

The back of the frame has an attached sheet with biographical information on Bell. Even though the Tippecanoe Guards served as part of the 6th Iowa, Joshua Bell was not with them.
