The eagle masthead discharge is housed in a modern wooden frame that meas. approx. 12.50 x 15.75 inches. The document is filled out in period ink which is readable despite scattered surface dirt and ink smudges.

The document is complete with only minor chipping along the edges. It has one vertical and three horizontal folds.

Document is signed at bottom by mustering officer and the company commander.

The discharge is made out for Private Benjamin DeGroat of Company B, 151st Pennsylvania Volunteers. DeGroat was born in Sussex County, New Jersey on June 23, 1838. He enlisted in Captain Lafayette Westbrooks Company for 9 months on September 15, 1862. He is described as being 24 years old and standing 5’ 9.75” high with dark complexion brown eyes and dark hair. By profession he was a farmer.

The 151st was assigned to the 1st Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw action at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In the last named battle the regiment suffered severely losing 50 killed, 200 wounded, 35 captured and 8 missing. DeGroat was indeed fortunate to come through unscathed.

Private DeGroat died on October 4, 1909 in Hawley, Pennsylvania and is buried in Lakeville Cemetery, Lakeville, Pennsylvania.
