GROUP OF DISCHARGES FOR A SOLDIER AND HIS DOG!

This small group contains three eagle masthead discharges, 2 for a soldier named William C. Broomell and 1 for his dog “PRINCE.”

The first discharge in the group is for Broomell’s service in Company C, 124th Pennsylvania which he joined on August 6, 1862. The regiment saw action at South Mountain, Antietam and Chancellorsville. Broomell was discharged on May 17, 1863. The document has several horizontal and one vertical fold lines and some chipping across the bottom. Face of document also has a Paymaster’s “PAID IN FULL” stamp. Document is filled out in ink and is readable.

The second discharge is for Broomell’s service in an Independent Pennsylvania Engineer Company which he joined as a Corporal on February 24, 1864. During his time with this unit he was stationed at Harper’s Ferry. He was discharged on July 11, 1865. Document is in good condition with light surface dirt. Document is filled out in ink and though faint in some ares, is readable.

The last and best document is for PRINCE the dog. It is the usual eagle masthead discharge like the previous two described and is filled out in red ink as follows;

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

KNOW YE, THAT GOOD DOG PRINCE A DOG OF INDEPENDENT COMPANY, PENN VOLS ACTING ENGINEERS WHO WAS ENROLLED ON THE TWENTIETH DAY OF JUNE ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOUR TO SERVE THREE YEARS OR DURING THE WAR, IS HEREBY DISCHARGED FROM THE SERVICE OF THE UNITED STATES THIS ELEVENTH DAY OF JULY, 1865 AT HARPER’S FERRY W.VA. BY REASON OF DISCHARGE OF COMPANY. (NO OBJECTION TO HIS BEING RE-ENLISTED IS KNOWN TO EXIST)

SAID GOOD DOG PRINCE WAS BORN IN WILLIAMSPORT IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND, IS ONE + ½ YEARS OF AGE, ONE FEET – INCHES HIGH, YELLOW COMPLEXION, LIGHT EYES, LIGHT HAIR, AND BY OCCUPATION, WHEN ENROLLED, A DOG.

GIVEN AT HARPER’S FERRY VA THIS ELEVENTH DAY OF JULY 1865.

William C. Broomell was born September 30, 1834 and died March 4, 1899. His army service is stated above. He is buried in Union Cemetery, Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania.    [ad]
