Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 465-116

This little group of two documents is for a 44 year old Private named William Lockhart of Captain John P. Carie’s Company I, 91st Pennsylvania infantry.

The first document is headed “CERTIFICATE TO BE GIVEN TO VOLUNTEERS AT THE TIME OF THEIR DISCHARGE TO ENABLE THEM TO RECEIVE THEIR PAY.” Document is pre-printed and filled out in legible ink. It meas. approx. 8.50 x 11.00 inches.

The document gives interesting details about Private Lockhart. It says that he was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, that he is 44 years old, stands 5’ 8 ½ ‘ tall with fair complexion, blue eyes and mixed hair and was by occupation a paper maker. It also states that Lockhart enlisted at Philadelphia on November 20, 1861 and is being discharged on a surgeon’s certificate of disability. The document is dated March 25, 1862. At bottom is the signature of his company commander Captain John P. Carie.

The document is in fair condition. It is readable but the bottom edge is badly chipped and approx. 1.25 inches of the left edge of the paper has separated and split into two pieces. All of the document is present. Upper edge is missing a 1.50 x 1.00 inch piece but none of the printing is affected.

The second document details Private Lockhart’s pay. Document is pre-printed and filled out in legible ink. It has 2 horizontal and one vertical fold line. The lower horizontal fold line has split the document in two. At bottom where Private Lockhart was to sign there is an “X” with a note that reads “HIS MARK.” Then Lockhart’s name is written in by the clerk who filled out the document. Upper left hand corner has a 1.25 x 1.00 inch piece of paper stuck to it. Document meas. approx. 8.00 x 10.00 inches.

Not the best of condition but an interesting item none the less.  [ad]
