Standard “To all Whom it may Concern” government form, 8.5 x 11”. Record Pvt. Neuman’s enlistment—8/23/1862—and discharge—6/8/1865. Vital statistics as follows: Born, Bavaria ; Age, 20 ; Complexion, Light ; Height, 5’5”; Hair, light; Occupation, Farmer. Exhibits fold-marks and light yellowing while remaining entirely legible.
Pvt. Neuman’s unit the 150th New York Infantry, was organized in Poughkeepsie, NY, in October 1862. Attached to the 12th Corps, the regiment was engaged, July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, where had 45 killed and wounded. In the 1864 Atlanta Campaign it was engaged at Resaca, Cassville, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek and the Siege of Atlanta (100 killed and wounded during the Atlanta Campaign), and in Sherman’s later March to the Sea and through the Carolinas. Mustered out 6/8/ 1865, during service the unit lost 51 men killed and mortally wounded and 78 by disease for a total of 132.
Document is signed twice by E.A. Wickes as Capt., 150th N.Y.S. Vols, 1st Div., 20 A.C., and once by W.S. Van Keuren, Capt. Co. C, 150th NY Vols. Rubber stamped by the Paymaster, U.S.A., Washington, that bounty has been paid. Signed in red ink, Paid in full, Bty., James Lupton, A.P.M., U.S.A., Pokeepshie, N.Y., Jun 17/65, and has the embossed seal of Maj. Jas. Lupton, Add’t Paymaster, U.S.A.
Edward A. Wickes, was a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY when he enlisted on 9/26/62, and was commissioned captain, 150th NY Infantry. Mustered out on 8/2/65.
Willaim S. Van Keuren was a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY when he enlisted on 9/27/62 and was commissioned 1st Lt. 150th NY. Wounded in action on 7/20/64 at Peach Tree Creek, GA. Promoted to Captain on 3/2/65; mustered out on 6/8/65.
