Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 492-36

Items matted against white and green, and mounted in a contemporary brass fame measuring 16.5 x 12", with card backing & hang-wire. The two carte de visites at right and left feature Heintzelman in seated and standing positions, and the vignetted circular CDV at center is a bust portrait from the seated pose. His shoulder strap star indicates that these images were taken at some point between his promotion to brigadier general [May 1861] and before his promotion to major general [July 4, 1862]. All images are sharp and clear, with minor spotting in an upper corner of the standing image.

The ALS measures 4.75 x 6.5" and is handwritten in ink. Below the printed heading "Headquarters Department of Washington / 1863". Dated "Washington Feb. 26th", the text reads as follows: "L. J. Cest Esq / St. Louis Mo. / The dates are / Col. 17th US Infy May 14. 1861 / Brig. Gnl Vols. [May] 17. [1861] / Brig. Gnl. Vols. [May] 3 1862 / Major Gnl. Vols July 4 [1862] / S. P. Heintzelman / Major General." In this note, which is in pristine condition, Heintzelman list his Civil War promotions from Colonel through Major General.

Heintzelman was a graduate of the West Point class of 1826 who later distinguished himself in the Mexican War, winning a brevet of major for gallantry at Huamantla. Heintzelman Civil War star rose and fell during the first year of the war. Despite considerable personal gallantry displayed as a brigade and divisional commander, Heintzelman's commands never distinguished themselves, and he was shuttled off the line to Washington Defense duty through the remainder of the war.

Superb Heintzelman collage, in great condition.
