Dated “War Department/ Washington City/ Jun 2, 1869.” Written in the hand of “Col. W. G. Moore/Secretary.” 1 page, in ink, on lined paper w/ War Department letter head, 4. 875 x 8.” Exhibits fold-marks. Else VG plus, and entirely legible.
John M. Schofield was an 1853 West Point graduate who achieved high prominence in Civil War while serving in Campaigns under western commanders Generals Grant, Sherman, and Thomas. Assuming command of the Army of Ohio in 1864, he was with Sherman at Atlanta and with Thomas at Nashville. During the Johnson administration, following Stanton’s dismissal, Schofield served as interim Secretary of War, and in that capacity, dictated the following letter. He followed Phil Sheridan as Commanding General of the United States Army—1888-1895.
