In July 1864 Rebel General Jubal Early invaded Maryland in order to relieve Federal pressure from the Siege of St. Petersburg taking place to the south. On July 9th Early fought the Federals at Monocacy, and on July 11 & 12th, again at Ft. Stevens on the outskirts of Washington, with President Lincoln observing. This New York paper offers contemporary journalistic commentary on Early’s failed Maryland invasion.
